Sleep & Airway Patient Guide

Screening, diagnosis, and treatment options for sleep-disordered breathing.

Sleep-disordered breathing (including snoring, upper airway resistance syndrome, and obstructive sleep apnea) affects your health far beyond feeling tired. At South Austin Dental, we screen for airway issues as part of our comprehensive evaluation and work with sleep physicians to provide treatment options.

Understanding Sleep-Disordered Breathing

  • Sleep-disordered breathing occurs when the airway narrows or collapses during sleep, reducing oxygen flow.
  • Common signs include loud snoring, gasping during sleep, morning headaches, daytime fatigue, and teeth grinding.
  • Untreated sleep apnea is linked to high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and depression.
  • Diagnosis requires a sleep study. We can provide a take-home sleep monitor for initial screening.
  • Treatment options include CPAP therapy, oral appliance therapy, and in some cases surgical intervention.
  • Oral appliance therapy is often effective for mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea.
