Oncology Patient Guide

Protecting your oral health during and after cancer treatment.

Cancer treatment can significantly affect your oral health. Whether you are preparing for chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or immunotherapy, coordinating dental care with your oncology team is essential. At South Austin Dental, we work alongside your physicians to protect your mouth during and after treatment.

Guidelines for Dental Care During Cancer Treatment

  • Schedule a full dental exam before starting cancer treatment.
  • Maintain gentle but thorough oral hygiene: brush with a soft-bristled toothbrush and use alcohol-free mouthwash.
  • Stay hydrated and use saliva substitutes if you experience dry mouth.
  • Avoid spicy, acidic, or rough-textured foods that can irritate sensitive oral tissues.
  • Report any mouth sores, bleeding gums, jaw pain, or changes in taste to both your oncologist and our office.
  • If you are receiving bisphosphonate therapy, inform us. These medications can affect dental procedures.
  • We coordinate directly with your oncology team to time dental treatments safely around your therapy schedule.
